Notes
From Back Cover Left Side Description:The liner notes on Steel Dan's 1975 Katy Lied carefully detail the methods of sound creation and transfer used in the recording. high fidelity, computer mix downs, logic circuits, individual microphone equalization - basically, a slew of big words detailing a supreme, inimitable sound.
On The Katy Lied Sessions, Groove Records breaks down that sound. This very special LP features outtakes and alternate versions from the 1974-1975 recording sessions of Katy Lied, plus two bonus tracks from Steely Dan's one and only concert tour. And so, for the first time, fans of William Burroughs' illegitimate children can witness the kids' dazzling studio proficiency in its infant stages.
Kick off your high heeled sneakers, Steely fans -its party time!
Daddy Don't Live in the New York City No More: With unenhanced stereo sound, and a shaky vocal, this take features a tinkling piano sequence at the close which was ultimately discarded.
Chained Lightning: Also unenhanced, Denny Dias' notorious guitar solo is here slightly different than in the released version.
Black Friday: The guitar solo track is absent from this track, with most of the emphasis placed on Fagen's organ stylings.
Rose Darling: Pretty much the same as the actual release.
Throw Back The Little Ones: Features a working vocal with an opening groan of fatigue (or despair?) from Fagen. An added piano riff appears at the bridge and lingers on throughout, while an unidentified voice instructs the band to "take it back to the top". Could this be producer Gary Katz?
Doctor Wu: Some mumbled instructions open up this unenhanced track, which is without Phil Woods' classic alto solo.
Your Gold Teeth II: Fagens' voice is multitracked, an effect which was discarded for the release. A voice (presumably Katz again) requests, "Let me hear the guitar solo", to which he later exclaims, "Holy fucks, that's great!".
The Caves of Altamira: Originally intended for Katy Lied, this track ended up on 1976's The Royal Scam. An unidentified co-vocalist accompanies Fagen and his Monkish piano... to sing an extra, unreleased verse!
Do It Again: Live!!
Reeling in the Years: Live, with a raunchy opening guitar solo!
