"E.T. Mensah has notched his half century on the board. He taught himself music starting with the flute. During World War II, saxophonist Sgt. Leopard of the British Army in West Africa looking for musicians took him under his tutelage. From him, E.T. learnt how to play the alto saxophone. He took to playing the trumpet and later led the Accra Tempos Band. E.T. claims that it was watching and listening to Eddie Calvert play Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom that encouraged him to play the trumpet the way he does now. Many musicians in Ghana have passed through his hands: many more extending outside Ghana have modelled their style on his. There is therefore no doubt at all that he deserves the title "King of Highlife", which was dubbed upon him by his many admirers."
